After Putin proposed a meeting in Istanbul on May 15, the Ukrainian president demands a full, lasting and reliable ceasefire
A long-awaited step
Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed the Russian proposal for a summit in Istanbul with cautious optimism. He called it a positive signal, suggesting that Moscow may finally be open to discussing the end of the war.
“The world has been waiting for this moment for a long time,” he said. “And the first step to end any war is a ceasefire.”
“No more bloodshed, not even for one day”
Zelensky didn’t mince words: “There’s no sense in continuing to massacre people even for a single day. We expect Russia to confirm a complete, lasting and reliable ceasefire starting tomorrow, May 12. Only then will Ukraine be ready to meet.”
This statement underscores Kyiv’s firm stance: no room for partial or fragile agreements, but a demand for solid guarantees.
Will Istanbul mark a turning point?
The Turkish city could become the stage of a historic dialogue. After months of brutal war, bombings and international turmoil, May 15 could usher in a new era.
The situation is still fragile, but public statements from both sides about a possible meeting are already a significant diplomatic development.
