A tradition of solidarity in pharmacies across Italy
From February 4 to 10, 2025, the National Drug Collection Day (GRF) will take place across Italy. This well-established charitable initiative, promoted by Banco Farmaceutico, marks its 25th anniversary this year. In Lombardy, citizens can visit any of the 1,384 participating pharmacies (39 more than in 2024) to purchase over-the-counter medications that will be collected by 448 charitable and welfare organizations and donated to people and families in financial difficulty. More than 150,000 individuals receive assistance from Lombardy’s charities involved in the GRF.
Pharmacists and Banco Farmaceutico volunteers will guide donors on the most requested products based on the specific needs of various organizations. The estimated demand is around 297,000 medicinal units. The complete list of participating pharmacies, identified by an event poster, is available on www.bancofarmaceutico.org. As in previous years, pharmacies will not only facilitate donations but will also contribute with direct charitable contributions.
A growing impact in Lombardy
During the 2024 GRF, pharmacies in Lombardy collected 143,954 medication packages, amounting to €1,315,571, representing approximately 25% of the national total. This substantial contribution enabled nearly 100,000 people to receive essential medical assistance.
Giuliano Salvioni, President of Banco Farmaceutico Milano Onlus, reflects on the initiative’s journey:
“The 25 years of Banco Farmaceutico’s activity are not merely a milestone to celebrate. When we started, it was clear that, alone, we would only achieve a symbolic initiative with no real impact. Instead, what we have today is the result of a virtuous collaboration between pharmacists, pharmaceutical companies, distributors, donors, volunteers, charitable organizations, and institutions—each contributing their expertise, resources, and generosity.”
Annarosa Racca, President of Federfarma Lombardia, highlights the ongoing issue of healthcare poverty:
“Healthcare poverty forces many people to forgo necessary treatments for themselves and their families. This is a critical issue that we cannot ignore. Addressing the healthcare needs of the most vulnerable is an essential part of a community pharmacy’s mission. From its inception, we have enthusiastically supported the Banco Farmaceutico initiative, and Lombardy has always demonstrated great generosity. In 2024, our region contributed about 25% of the total national donations. With even more pharmacies participating this year, I am particularly pleased and grateful to my colleagues for their continued commitment.”
Conclusion
As Banco Farmaceutico celebrates 25 years of commitment to helping those in need, the XXV National Drug Collection Day continues to grow, with more pharmacies and donors joining the cause.
