After Geneva talks, a first agreement is announced along with a consultation mechanism to ease trade tensions
Swiss talks: a turning point
After months of tariff-driven tension, Washington and Beijing appear to be choosing the path of diplomacy. Two days of intense negotiations in Switzerland have led to results described as “substantial” by both sides. US Treasury SecretaryScott Bessent confirmed the progress in comments reported by Bloomberg.
A more relaxed climate between the superpowers
The tone of the talks was described as “very constructive” by US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, who emphasized that the differences with China “are not that big.” This shift in rhetoric marks a clear departure from the combative stance of previous rounds of negotiation.
The first step: a preliminary trade deal
Later in the day, the White House and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng officially announced a preliminary trade agreement. While details are expected in the coming hours, the agreement is being seen as a concrete move toward de-escalating the trade war that has shaken global markets in recent years.
The heart of the deal: a permanent consultation mechanism
One of the most significant outcomes of the talks is the establishment of a bilateral consultation mechanism. According to Li Chenggang, China’s representative for international trade, the mechanism will enable “regular and irregular exchanges” on all commercial issues, with the goal of preventing future conflicts and managing crises proactively.
