Emanuele De Maria, on work release after a femicide conviction, killed himself from the Milan Cathedral. A second victim is found at Parco Nord

The escape and a suspected new crime

Emanuele De Maria, 35, was serving time for a femicide committed in 2016, and had recently been granted external work release at a Milan hotel. Last week, he stabbed a coworker and vanished. Soon after, a 50-year-old Sri Lankan colleague, who also worked at the hotel, went missing—fueling fears of a second victim.

A fatal fall from Milan’s Duomo

This morning, a man threw himself off the terraces of the Duomo in Milan, falling approximately 40 meters to his death. In his pockets was a photocopy of an ID, but his identity was confirmed by numerous tattoos on his body. Authorities quickly connected the suicide to the fugitive De Maria, still wanted for the stabbing.

This led to a renewed urgency in the search for the missing woman.

The body discovered in Parco Nord

By the afternoon, the worst fears were confirmed: a body was found in a pond at Parco Nord, spotted by a passerby. Early reports suggest it is the missing coworker, Chamila Wijesuriya, though forensic confirmation is pending.

Investigators now believe De Maria may have murdered her before the stabbing, making him responsible for two violent attacks in just days—despite being under semi-custody.

A system under fire

The fact that De Maria, a convicted femicide perpetrator, had been granted a work release, has sparked public outrage. How could someone with a violent past gain enough freedom to potentially kill again?

This tragedy raises serious questions about the failures of the justice system in preventing further violence by repeat offenders, especially those with a history of gender-based crimes.

De Maria’s suicide is not just a tragic end—it’s a devastating indictment of a system that may have placed trust in the wrong person.
