Since January 1, 2025, leaving electronic tips in bars, restaurants, and hotels has become easier thanks to new measures introduced in the budget law. The aim is to encourage digital payments to reward tourism and hospitality staff, promoting transparency and innovation within the sector.
New fiscal measures for digital tips
The 2025 budget law introduces significant incentives for tips received through electronic payments. Key changes include:
- Application of a reduced 5% substitute tax on digital tips.
- Increase in the annual fiscally incentivized amount limit from 25% to 30% of income.
- Expansion of the income threshold to qualify for benefits, rising from €50,000 to €75,000 annually.
These measures represent a major step in supporting tourism sector workers, such as waitstaff, drivers, and other service personnel.
The need for advanced technological solutions
For these measures to be effective, collaboration between businesses, institutions, and the banking system is crucial. Improving electronic payment devices (POS) to integrate tipping features seamlessly is key. Automated solutions, such as separate tip registration within a single transaction, are vital for fostering this innovative practice.
According to Unimpresa, such technologies not only enhance customer experience but also drive digital transformation within the tourism sector, boosting its global competitiveness.
A choice that preserves payment freedom
While promoting digital payments, Unimpresa emphasizes the importance of retaining the option to give tips in cash, a crucial component for ensuring an inclusive economy. Edoardo Maria Lofoco, Unimpresa’s national advisor, states:
“Preserving cash use respects consumer payment habits and promotes greater economic freedom.”
Simultaneously, specific agreements between banks and businesses are encouraged to speed up the adoption of new technologies.
Towards a more competitive future for Italian tourism
Unimpresa is committed to monitoring the implementation of these measures introduced in the 2025 budget law, working with all stakeholders to ensure tangible benefits for workers and businesses.
The success lies in a close synergy between the private sector, banking system, and institutions, aiming to enhance transparency, innovation, and economic well-being for tourism professionals.
