A detailed investigation against theft targeting seniors
The hug technique, a frequently used method to deceive victims, remains a preferred approach for stealing money from elderly individuals. The latest incident took place in Dolo (VE), where the Carabinieri from Este’s Operational and Mobile Unit (N.O.R.M.) and Monselice Station arrested two women involved in a theft.
Thanks to surveillance and tailing efforts, the officers tracked the suspects to a residence where they carried out their plan. Pretending to be friendly, the women skillfully stole €100 in cash from an elderly resident.
The theft and the arrest
The two women, aged 37 and 20, both previously known to the police, initially roamed aimlessly through the local market in Dolo. Their behavior did not escape the attention of the Carabinieri, who monitored their every move. After briefly entering the victim’s house, the suspects used a seemingly friendly hug to cunningly steal the money.
Their escape ended near the Monselice motorway tollbooth, where a patrol intercepted their car and recovered the stolen sum. The suspects were taken to the Este Command and detained in custody.
Ongoing investigations for similar incidents
Investigators are now working to determine whether the two women are connected to other similar thefts in the area. The hug technique is, unfortunately, a common tactic to exploit the most vulnerable members of society, such as the elderly. Collaboration between the Este and Monselice stations once again highlights law enforcement’s dedication to combating predatory crimes.
During the fast-track validation hearing, it was decided that the investigation will continue to establish the suspects’ full accountability.
