AfD dominates in Eastern German regions
Official election results from the new Bundesländer confirm a concerning trend for traditional parties: Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) has emerged as the leading party in all Eastern regions, except for Berlin. This success reinforces the rise of the far-right in Germany and the decline of moderate political forces.
Crushing victories in Brandenburg and Saxony
In Brandenburg, according to official data, AfD secured 32.5% of the votes, cementing its dominance. Even more striking is the result in Saxony, where, with 12 out of 16 districts counted, the party has reached an astonishing 38.8%. This unprecedented surge poses a serious challenge to traditional German politics.
Confirmed victories in Thuringia, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, and Saxony-Anhalt
In the Bundesländer of Thuringia, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, and Saxony-Anhalt, where the vote count is still ongoing, AfD is firmly ahead, securing its position as the strongest political force in the region.
Berlin remains an exception
While the trend in the East is clear, the capital tells a different story: in Berlin, with the vote count almost complete, the leading party is Die Linke, with 20.1% of the votes. Meanwhile, AfD lags behind in fifth place with only 13.9%, proving that the city remains a stronghold of left-wing and progressive forces.
A strong message for German politics
The strengthening of AfD in Eastern Germany is a significant warning sign for traditional parties and German politics as a whole. With an electorate increasingly leaning toward sovereignist positions, moderate forces will need to rethink their strategies and policies to regain public trust.
