From 2026, Myung-Whun Chung will take over from Riccardo Chailly to lead the legendary Milanese theatre until 2030
A historic passing of the baton
The Teatro alla Scala in Milan is preparing for a new era. The Board of Directors unanimously approved the proposal of Superintendent Fortunato Ortombina to appoint Myung-Whun Chung as the new music director, from 2026 to 2030. Chung will succeed Riccardo Chailly, one of the most iconic figures in recent La Scala history.
A long-standing bond with La Scala
Chung is no stranger to the Milanese audience. His relationship with La Scala’s Orchestra and Choir has been long and fruitful. He is considered one of the most refined Verdi interpreters in the world and has already brought to the stage not only the Italian master’s works, but also those of other great composers from the operatic and symphonic repertoire.
A challenging legacy, a clear vision
Taking over from a figure like Chailly is no easy task. But Chung brings with him a quiet charisma, a deep musical sensitivity, and a unique ability to connect with musicians. His style, rooted in listening and emotional depth, is expected to usher in a season of artistic brilliance and innovation, fully aligned with the Scala’s great tradition.
A perfect synergy with Ortombina
Chung’s term will coincide with the final years of Ortombina’s mandate, which ends in 2030. This strategic overlap ensures artistic continuity and a strong, shared vision for the theatre’s future.
