The Holy Door of Rebibbia: a historic event
For the first time in history, a Holy Door was opened in a penitentiary. This deeply symbolic act was performed by Pope Francis during a ceremony at Rebibbia prison. With three knocks on the door, the Pope initiated a profound moment of spirituality for those in attendance.
Explaining the significance of his gesture, the Pope said, “Open the doors of your hearts to hope.” About 300 inmates, along with prison staff, took part in the ceremony, feeling part of a universal message of renewal.
A message of hope for everyone
During his homily, Pope Francis emphasized that the Jubilee represents an opportunity to open hearts to hope. Addressing the inmates directly, he said, “The second door is yours: it’s a beautiful act to open doors, which means open hearts.” He further added, “Hope never disappoints, never lose hope.”
The Pontiff intended this ceremony to resonate globally, not only with those present but with the entire prison population worldwide. Among the participants was Justice Minister Carlo Nordio, who attended the event with deep engagement.
A Jubilee for those on the margins
Through this gesture, Pope Francis reaffirmed that no one is beyond God’s grace. Bringing the Jubilee of hope to a prison is a call to reflect on themes of justice, humanity, and redemption. The opening of the Holy Door at Rebibbia stands as a powerful symbol, not only for inmates but for anyone seeking a new chance in life.
