After months of intense conflict, the ceasefire implemented on November 27, 2024, offers a glimmer of hope for Lebanon. Yet, this fragile peace remains under constant threat, endangering humanitarian aid efforts and reconstruction. Azione Contro la Fame (Action Against Hunger) emphasizes the need for international backing to ensure this truce translates into meaningful recovery for affected families.
Daily struggles for families and refugees
The conflict has devastated homes and critical infrastructure, leaving many without access to clean water, sanitation, or electricity. Over 22,200 people are currently sheltering in collective sites, while curfews and landmines restrict safe return to 62 villages.
These challenges also hamper aid delivery, making it difficult for humanitarian workers to reach vulnerable communities. “Ensuring the safety of our teams is a top priority,” says Suzanne Takkenberg, director of Azione Contro la Fame in Lebanon. “Despite the obstacles, we are scaling up efforts to provide food, water, and shelter in remote areas.”
The risk of waterborne diseases
With winter approaching, health risks are escalating. Damaged sanitation systems increase the likelihood of waterborne disease outbreaks. Azione Contro la Fame is monitoring population dynamics and collaborating with other humanitarian actors to restore critical infrastructure and support displaced families. “Our goal is to help people return home safely and with dignity,” explains Takkenberg.
Food insecurity and malnutrition
Food insecurity remains another critical issue. Rising prices and the loss of livelihoods have left many families unable to purchase food. To address this, Azione Contro la Fame is distributing meals in shelters, supporting pregnant women and children with supplemental nutrition, and monitoring malnutrition cases.
“Our work extends beyond food distribution. We are setting up community kitchens and building support networks to ensure a sustainable future for affected families,” adds Takkenberg.
A call for international action
Azione Contro la Fame calls on the international community to uphold the ceasefire as a vital step toward reconstruction and lasting peace. Without coordinated intervention, conditions in Lebanon risk further deterioration.
