The city of Daraa, located in southern Syria near the Jordanian border, has once again become the focus of international attention. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, opposition groups have taken control of the area, marking a significant symbolic victory. Daraa is regarded as the birthplace of the 2011 uprising against Bashar al-Assad’s regime, where early protests demanding freedom and reforms were violently suppressed, sparking the ongoing civil war.
Towards Damascus: rebels on the move
Following the capture of Daraa, rebels are advancing towards Damascus. Recent reports confirm the seizure of Quneitra, near the Israeli border, and Sanmin, located just 20 kilometers from the Syrian capital. Local sources report government forces retreating from key strategic positions, with Russian military units also scaling back their presence in the area.
This new offensive places significant pressure on the Assad regime, which has acknowledged its withdrawal from Daraa and other southern areas like Al-Sawida.
International responses
As the conflict escalates, diplomatic efforts intensify. At the Italian Foreign Ministry, Antonio Tajani chaired a meeting with Italian and Middle Eastern ambassadors to discuss initiatives to halt military operations and ensure the evacuation of Italian citizens and religious personnel from Syria. “We are ready to take all necessary measures to ensure the safe exit of those who request it,” the minister stated.
Meanwhile, discussions are ongoing in Doha between Iran, Russia, and Turkey to address the unfolding situation. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov reaffirmed Moscow’s commitment to supporting the Syrian government through military operations against the rebels, aiming to prevent terrorist groups from gaining control in the region.
A rapidly changing scenario
The situation in Syria remains highly volatile, with dynamics on the ground shifting quickly. As rebels approach Damascus, Assad’s regime appears to be consolidating its defenses around the capital, foreshadowing a potential escalation in fighting in the days to come.
