Rebel souls walking through Rome: the theatrical tour that gives voice to courageous women

Starting July 2, a night live experience from ancient Rome to today’s femicides, honoring women who challenged silence and violence

Rebel souls: a bridge between past and present

Starting on July 2, 2025, the streets of Rome will transform into an open-air stage for a unique theatrical event: “Rebel Souls: Courageous Women of Rome”, the new edition of the Theatrical Guided Tours curated by Luca Basile, in collaboration with I Viaggi di Adriano and the Fenix Theater Company. A live experience blending history, theatre and social activism, linking past heroines to the contemporary tragedy of femicides.

An immersive format to remember and reflect

The format is now a beloved summer tradition in Rome: open-air performances, nighttime tours, and a dramatic narration brought to life by professional actors and guides. “Rebel Souls” is not just entertainment, but an act of remembrance and awareness, aiming to keep these stories alive and inspire social change.

Forgotten women who made history

Set in the evocative setting of Rome’s Gianicolo Hill, from Fontanone to Trastevere, participants will meet the faces and voices of women who defied oppression, dictatorship and silence:

  • Anna, the partisan from Trastevere, symbol of resistance and dignity
  • Rosalia Crispi, the only woman to unexpectedly join Garibaldi’s Expedition of the Thousand, refusing the role of passive wife to Prime Minister Francesco Crispi
  • Marcella Bonelli, lover of a partisan killed at the Fosse Ardeatine, her love story tragically ended by war
  • Teresa Gullace, whose real story inspired the character of “Pina” played by Anna Magnani in Rome Open City, shot dead while bringing food to her imprisoned husband

These voices, often silenced by official history, resurface in this emotional journey under the stars, revealing how today’s battles still mirror yesterday’s tragedies.

A calendar full of stories and legends

Besides “Rebel Souls”, the summer theatrical calendar includes evening tours dedicated to major figures and tales from Rome’s past, such as CaravaggioTrilussaMichelangeloBeatrice CenciBernini vs Borromini, and many others.

From Wednesday to Friday, these live performances invite both locals and visitors to rediscover the city’s essence through art, history and collective memory.
