The 2024/2025 ski season is just around the corner, and the mountains are ready to welcome thousands of enthusiasts, both young and old, eager to enjoy snowy slopes. However, along with the joy of skiing and snowboarding comes the risk of injuries, which can spoil the experience. Experts from the Italian Society of Orthopedics and Traumatology (SIOT) emphasize that prevention starts with proper physical preparation and adherence to safety rules.

Injury statistics from South Tyrol

According to data from the Provincial Institute of Statistics (ASTAT) for winter 2023/2024, South Tyrol recorded 11,121 injuries on the slopes. Of these, 38.7% involved knee injuries, followed by shoulder injuries (12.7%) and head injuries (7.7%). Most accidents occurred on red slopes (50.3%), with the 11-20 age group being the most affected (21%).

Common mistakes on the slopes

The main causes of injuries include accidental falls without third-party involvement, accounting for 77.6% of cases, and collisions with other skiers (11.4%). These incidents often stem from a lack of physical preparation, improper gear, and failure to pay attention to weather conditions or overcrowded slopes.

SIOT’s safety guidelines

To enjoy a safe skiing experience, SIOT recommends following these key guidelines:

  • Prepare physically year-round with targeted exercises to strengthen muscles and improve endurance.
  • Always wear a helmet and other protective gear, such as back protectors and reinforced gloves.
  • Perform a proper warm-up before hitting the slopes to avoid strains and sprains.
  • Always check slope conditions, including ice, visibility, and crowd levels.
  • Avoid self-teaching: beginners should rely on professional instructors to learn the basics.
  • Respect personal limits and listen to your body, refraining from skiing if feeling tired or unwell.

The importance of proper equipment

Using appropriate equipment is another key factor. Skis and snowboards should be tailored to the user’s weight, height, and skill level. Before each season, it’s crucial to visit specialized centers for proper maintenance.
