The land is becoming increasingly unstable: the risk is growing, and funds are not enough
The Phlegraean Fields have long been under the scrutiny of experts due to a phenomenon that is becoming increasingly alarming: bradyseism. This rising and sinking of the ground, combined with intense seismic activity, is endangering thousands of lives.
According to Unimpresa’s research center, at least 500 million euros are needed for safety measures in the area. An intervention that can no longer be delayed, especially after yet another earthquake recorded today, a sign that the situation is becoming increasingly critical.
Increasing seismic activity: A growing threat
From 2023 to today, the Phlegraean Fields have recorded over 23,000 seismic events, with a steady increase in both frequency and intensity. Among the most significant episodes:
- August 18, 2023: 150 tremors in a single day, the strongest reaching 3.6 magnitude.
- August 21, 2023: A 2.5 magnitude earthquake woke up the local population.
- May 20, 2024: A 4.4 magnitude quake, the strongest in 40 years, led to building evacuations in Pozzuoli.
- July 26, 2024: A 4.0 magnitude tremor hit Naples with its epicenter in the Phlegraean Fields.
These events not only terrify residents but have already caused significant structural and economic damage.
Funds allocated: A drop in the ocean
After the May 20, 2024 earthquake, the government allocated 50 million euros for the repair and seismic upgradingof damaged buildings. Later, the 2025 Budget Law provided another 100 million euros, spread over 20 million per year until 2029. However, these funds are far from the 500 million needed for true structural security.
An active volcanic caldera under constant surveillance
The Phlegraean Fields are an active volcanic caldera, one of the most dangerous in the world. Authorities have reinforced monitoring and prevention measures, but these alone are not enough.
Unimpresa’s appeal: Act now to avoid disaster
Unimpresa’s president, Giovanna Ferrara, insists on the urgency of an immediate and substantial intervention:
“Despite efforts, bradyseism remains a tangible threat. 500 million euros are just a fraction of what might be needed.”
