Erdogan, Macron, Trump and Zelensky converge on a ceasefire opportunity: Istanbul could mark a turning point on May 15

Erdogan calls it a historic turning point

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, during a phone call with Emmanuel Macron, described recent developments in the Russia–Ukraine conflict as a “historic turning point”. He urged that this opportunity must not be missed and reaffirmed Turkey’s readiness to act as mediator by hosting peace talks.

Turkey’s willingness to facilitate dialogue was met with a notable gesture from the Kremlin: Putin proposed to start negotiations in Istanbul on May 15. A sign that diplomacy might regain momentum.

Trump: “Ukraine must accept Turkey’s invitation”

Former U.S. President Donald Trump also weighed in, urging Kiev to accept the Turkish invitation without delay. According to Trump, Putin isn’t offering a unilateral ceasefire, but is willing to negotiate an end to the war.

Trump emphasized that by attending the meeting, Ukraine would be in a position to test the sincerity of Russia’s intentions. If no deal is possible, he added, then the U.S. and EU will know how to proceed. He also took a jab at Zelensky, hinting that the Ukrainian leader might be more focused on WWII celebrations than peace talks.

Zelensky: “I’ll wait for Putin in Turkey on the 15th, but we need guarantees”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reaffirmed his willingness to meet with Putin in Istanbul, but under one strict condition: a complete, unconditional and reliable ceasefire starting May 12.

“There is no point in continuing the bloodshed. No more excuses,” said Zelensky. He made it clear that Ukraine is open to direct talks, but only if Russia proves its commitment to peace with real action, not just words.

May 15 in Istanbul: peace on the table?

The statements from Erdogan, Trump and Zelensky suggest that May 15 could become a landmark date in the pursuit of peace.

With Turkey offering the diplomatic venue, and global pressure mounting, the question now is: Will Putin show up? And will real progress be made?

Istanbul is ready. The world is watching.
