A record seizure in Salento

The Carabinieri of Casarano, supported by bomb disposal experts from Lecce, confiscated over 2 tons of explosives in a residence in Ugento. The operation, based on targeted investigations, led to the arrest of a 38-year-old man for illegal possession of explosives and clandestine pyrotechnic items.

The search uncovered:

  • 2,100 grams of black powder and 12 illegal firecrackers.
  • 15 kg of T1 pyrotechnic items, fuses, and components for firework manufacturing.
  • 2,304 hunting cartridges and ignition devices for pyrotechnics.

A van near the house was used to store approximately 1,300 kg of unclassified explosives, 49 handmade fireworks, and numerous launch mortars.

Public safety at risk

The proximity of explosive materials to residential areas posed a significant threat. The swift intervention by the Carabinieri averted potential disaster, emphasizing the importance of their operational readiness.

Operation outcomes

The arrested man was placed under house arrest by the Lecce Prosecutor. 19 legally held weapons were seized, and the explosive material will be destroyed or stored in authorized facilities. This operation is a crucial step in preventing incidents related to the misuse of fireworks, especially during the holiday season.
