Fighting against illegal trade and unsafe products

The Guardia di Finanza in Prato continues its relentless efforts to protect the industrial district and ensure consumer safety. The Mondo Sommerso operation, coordinated by the Regional Command of Tuscany, has exposed serious violations of product safety regulations.

Through extensive investigative work, authorities traced supply chain flows to identify sources of potentially dangerous products. This strategy led to the discovery of a retail business selling goods that did not meet European safety standards.

Hidden dangers in everyday items

Investigators uncovered over 2 million decorative items, including stickers, hair clips, keychains, and stationery, many featuring cartoon characters. While seemingly harmless, these products fall under the toy category, which is subject to strict regulations to ensure children’s safety.

The investigation revealed that these items lacked the required certifications, including the CE marking, which is essential for confirming compliance with EU safety standards. European regulations demand that all toys meet high safety standards for material composition, production processes, and consumer information.

As a result of the inspections, the Guardia di Finanza seized the entire stock, preventing millions of potentially hazardous products from reaching consumers. The operation also led to the prosecution of the business owner, initiating a legal process for violating product safety laws.

The total market value of the seized goods exceeds three million euros, impacting not only consumers but also law-abiding businesses that invest in proper certification and compliance.

Protecting consumers and fair competition

This operation is part of a broader initiative to combat the illegal trade of non-certified products, which poses risks to public health and harms ethical businesses. The availability of non-compliant goods lowers market standardsand creates unfair competition for companies that follow the rules.
