An investigation sparked by a prison break
Operation “CRIPTO”, led by the Raggruppamento Operativo Speciale (ROS) of the carabinieri, resulted in the arrest of seven individuals linked to a sophisticated drug trafficking operation centered in Vieste. The investigation began after the dramatic prison escape of the Vieste boss, Marco Raduano, from Badu e Carros prison on February 24, 2023.
Following this, Raduano’s right-hand man, Gianluigi Troiano, was arrested in Spain on January 30, 2024, in collaboration with the Guardia Civil’s UCO. Days later, on February 1, Raduano himself was apprehended in Corsica by the French Gendarmerie. These arrests provided crucial insights into a drug trafficking network connecting Morocco, Spain, and Italy.
A well-structured operation
According to the investigation, the trade of hashish and marijuana began with production in Morocco and Spain, before being transported to Italy via couriers. These shipments supplied the illegal drug market in Vieste, generating substantial profits.
The boss’s accomplices provided various forms of support:
- Financial assistance, sending funds derived from illicit activities.
- Logistical support, offering hospitality, transportation, and cover during conflicts.
- Encrypted communications, using “secure” phones purchased with drug money.
One of the most severe incidents involved an intimidation act against a relative of another informant, orchestrated to retaliate against statements made against the clan.
Operation outcomes
During the investigation, carabinieri seized 12.5 kg of drugs and arrested two individuals in flagrante delicto. The suspects face multiple charges, including personal aiding and abetting and drug trafficking.
It is essential to note that the case is still in the preliminary investigation phase. The suspects will undergo interrogations, and their defense will have the opportunity to address the charges during trial proceedings.
