On December 27th, a shocking incident took place at the Carabinieri Station in Afragola, near Naples. A 21-year-old man with no prior criminal record arrived armed with a knife, visibly agitated after a dispute. He attempted to break into the station, threw stones and pinecones at the windows, and later assaulted the Carabinieri officers trying to arrest him.

The court sentenced him to just four months, with a suspended sentence and no precautionary measures. This outcome left the Carabinieri disheartened, as they had to manage the situation, including guarding the suspect until the following morning.

Commenting on the case, Gennaro De Falco, a representative of MOSAC (Movimento Sindacale Autonomo Carabinieri), emphasized the need for a discussion on harsher penalties to prevent and counteract violent behavior. While respecting the court’s decision, MOSAC argues that such incidents should prompt reflection on the difficult conditions under which law enforcement officers operate daily.

“We cannot allow these episodes to become just another talking point on TV shows,” De Falco states, stressing that police officers must be equipped with proper tools and not treated as mere instruments to gain political approval.

MOSAC calls for urgent government action on the security package, ensuring that law enforcement officers are not left unprotected. “Enough with expressions of sympathy after attacks. It’s time to recognize the security sector as a fundamental asset for public safety.”
