Reggio Calabria – An investigation by the Financial Police has led to the seizure of assets and the suspension of a chief physician at the Locri hospital, accused of embezzlement, fraud against the State, and false declarations. The inquiry, directed by Prosecutor Giuseppe Casciaro, revealed serious mismanagement of healthcare resources.
The ongoing investigation uncovered that the physician systematically misappropriated an ultrasound machine intended for hospital use, using it in private clinics without authorization. Despite being under an exclusive contract with the Reggio Calabria Health Authority (ASP), the suspect falsely claimed to be on duty at the hospital to receive additional compensation, including the exclusivity allowance.
Investigation findings
During the authorities’ intervention, the chief physician was caught in the act, treating a patient at a private clinic with the misappropriated equipment. Moreover, on at least one occasion, the doctor allegedly refused to assist in a hospital emergency while on call.
The funds unlawfully obtained amount to €40,532, including payments for additional services and the exclusivity allowance. The Locri court has issued a precautionary measure prohibiting the doctor from practicing medicine for 12 months.
Commitment to protecting public healthcare
This operation highlights the efforts of the Locri Prosecutor’s Office and the Financial Police in tackling financial misconduct against the National Health Service, safeguarding public resources and the most vulnerable citizens.
The case remains in the preliminary investigation phase, and the suspect’s liability will only be confirmed by a final court ruling.
