Yesterday afternoon, the Italian Police arrested a 31-year-old man from Lecce, with minor previous offenses, for drug trafficking. He was found transporting over 13 kg of cocaine, likely intended for distribution in the city and nearby areas.

Agents from the Narcotics Section of Lecce’s Mobile Squad, following an intelligence investigation, discovered that the suspect was carrying a large quantity of drugs. They set up a surveillance operation, tracking his movements throughout the region.

During the journey, the man slowed down, turned on his emergency lights, and stopped in a rest area. At that moment, he was swiftly intercepted by the officers. When asked for his documents, he displayed visible signs of nervousness, though an initial check revealed nothing suspicious on him or inside the vehicle.

Due to the suspect’s behavior, the police decided to conduct a thorough search. The man and his vehicle were taken to the Lecce Police Headquarters, where a detailed inspection was carried out with the help of the canine unit from Brindisi Border Police.

During the search, officers discovered a hidden compartment inside a false bottom in the trunk. Upon removing a panel from the compartment, they found 11 packages wrapped in packing tape and 2 half-packages sealed in transparent cellophane, totaling 13.659 kg of cocaine.

The case was immediately reported to the on-duty prosecutor of the Lecce Court, who ordered the suspect’s detention at Borgo San Nicola Prison, awaiting trial confirmation.
