Nationwide anti-mafia raid targets organized crime

This morning, the Carabinieri of Catanzaro and the ROS executed a precautionary custody order against 44 individuals, accused of crimes linked to organized crime. The operation, coordinated by the Catanzaro judiciary, extended beyond Calabria, reaching Lazio, Piedmont, and Lombardy.

Among the arrested are businessmen, mafia affiliates, and even a mayor, suspected of mafia-related electoral fraud.

The charges: mafia, extortion, arms and drug trafficking

The investigation has unveiled the operations of the Guardavalle (CZ) ‘Ndrangheta clan, which maintained strongholds not only in southern Italy but also across northern regions. The charges include:

  • Mafia association
  • Extortion, threats, and damage to property
  • International arms and drug trafficking
  • Mafia-backed electoral fraud
  • Illegal business ownership and fraud

Authorities found that the criminal network controlled local businesses and public contracts, using intimidation and corruption to expand its influence.

The hidden boss and his underground bunker

One of the most shocking revelations was the 2021 capture of Cosimo Damiano Gallace, the clan leader, who was hiding in a secret bunker under a concrete plant in Isca sullo Ionio (CZ).

The investigation revealed that a family of construction entrepreneurs from Badolato (CZ) had been supporting his fugitive lifestyle, providing him with food, shelter, and security systems.

Economic control and public contracts infiltration

The ‘Ndrangheta clan was deeply involved in strategic economic sectors, particularly public infrastructure projects. Investigators discovered that the mafia had interests in the construction of a gas pipeline in Foggia, using front companies to secure lucrative deals.

As part of the crackdown, authorities also carried out an urgent asset seizure, confiscating two construction companies and multiple properties, including two quarries linked to the crime syndicate.

A significant blow to the mafia, but investigations continue

This operation represents a major success in the fight against organized crime, but the legal proceedings remain in their preliminary stages.

Under Italian law, the presumption of innocence applies, meaning the suspects’ guilt will only be confirmed if a final court ruling convicts them.
