“No more war!”: Pope Leo XIV’s blazing call for peace resounds worldwide

In his first Regina Coeli, the Pope urges an end to violence in Gaza, calls for hostage release, and speaks to the hearts of both the powerful and the youth

A cry against war: the voice of Pope Leo XIV shakes the square

With a resolute tone and compassionate gaze, Pope Leo XIV echoed a message that the world desperately needed to hear: “No more war!” In front of over 100,000 faithful gathered in a vibrant St. Peter’s Square for the World Day of Prayer for Vocations, he delivered a plea that was both spiritual and political.

Evoking the words of Pope Francis, Pope Leo warned against what he called “a third world war in pieces”, and demanded an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, humanitarian aid for civilians, and the release of hostages.

A strong message to world leaders

During his address, the Pope made a direct appeal to “the great ones of the Earth“, urging them to end the ongoing conflicts. His was not a vague spiritual invocation, but a crystal-clear call to action: “We must do everything possible to achieve a just and lasting peace.”

With characteristic humility and clarity, Pope Leo XIV emphasized the urgent need for global solidarity, placing human dignity at the center of diplomacy.

The crowd roars: “Leone! Leone!”

At 12:50 p.m., as the Pope stepped out onto the central balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, a wave of emotion swept the square. Flags from every continent danced in the spring wind as 100,000 voices roared his name: “Leone! Leone!”.

It was a moment of pure energy: families, young people, clergy, and pilgrims all joined in an unprecedented chorus of support.

A special word to the youth: “Do not be afraid”

Among the many passages of his homily, one message stood out:
“Do not be afraid. Accept the invitation of the Church and of Christ the Lord!”

Pope Leo’s words were a bold encouragement to embrace one’s vocation, to welcome faith in a noisy and cynical world, and to choose love and service over fear and indifference.

A morning rooted in tradition and prayer

Before the public prayer, Pope Leo celebrated Mass in the Vatican Grottoes, at the tomb of St. Peter. A deeply symbolic gesture that reaffirmed the continuity of tradition and the sacred responsibility of the papal role.

And just before concluding the Regina Coeli, the Pope added a warm thought for the day: “Happy Mother’s Day to all moms”, greeted by a long applause.
