Lipodystrophy is a rare disease that affects subcutaneous fat tissue, with serious consequences for metabolism and overall health. Today, the first National Congress on Lipodystrophy is taking place in Milan, gathering 90 leading experts from across Italy. Organized with the support of Rare Diseases Chiesi Italia, the event aims to improve diagnosis, management, and available treatments for patients.

A multidisciplinary approach to a complex disease

The congress, titled “The lipodystrophy patient: from diagnostic suspicion to multidisciplinary management”, is led by Professor Ferruccio Santini, a specialist in endocrinology at the University of Pisa. The event includes professionals from various fields, such as endocrinologists, hepatologists, cardiologists, and dietitians, discussing the challenges of lipodystrophy and sharing real-world evidence from Italian patients to refine treatment strategies.

What is lipodystrophy and what are its effects?

Lipodystrophy refers to a group of rare diseases characterized by abnormal loss of subcutaneous fat tissue. It can be congenital or acquired and may affect the whole body (generalized) or specific areas (partial). The lack of fat storage leads to harmful lipid accumulation in internal organs, resulting in:

  • Liver dysfunction, such as fatty liver disease;
  • Metabolic disorders, including diabetes and dyslipidemia;
  • Cardiovascular diseases, due to disrupted fat metabolism.

Early diagnosis and effective management

Recognizing lipodystrophy is challenging, as symptoms often mimic other conditions. A comprehensive diagnostic approach, including blood tests, imaging, and genetic testing, is crucial for early detection.

“Multidisciplinary collaboration is essential for timely diagnosis and optimal patient care – explains Prof. Ferruccio Santini – Leveraging real-world evidence helps us refine treatment approaches and improve outcomes.”

Dietary strategies and new treatment perspectives

A balanced diet, physical activity, and in some cases, leptin replacement therapy, are key to managing lipodystrophy.
