Lampedusa under siege: 670 migrants land in just 24 hours

Ten boats from Libya and one from Tunisia: the Mediterranean route intensifies

In just 24 hours, 670 migrants have arrived on the Italian island of Lampedusa, once again highlighting the intense pressure on this key entry point to Europe. Ten boats departed from Libya and were intercepted and rescued by Coast GuardFinance Police, and Frontex patrol boats. Another vessel, carrying 49 people from Monastir (Tunisia), managed to reach the island without assistance.

A hotspot on the brink: 765 people hosted, 580 relocated

With the continuous arrivals, Lampedusa’s reception centre has once again reached the brink of collapse. By the evening, the hotspot was hosting 765 migrants, far beyond its capacity. In response, 580 people were relocated to other facilities in a race against time. The situation remains critical, with no signs of a slowdown in the migration flow.

A European challenge still unanswered

Despite the efforts of Italian authorities and support from Frontex, managing migration flows remains a European challenge still largely unresolved. Lampedusa continues to be the first landing point for thousands of people seeking safety. Local communities and institutions are calling for structural solutions and a coordinated EU response, which remains elusive.
