Kum: a tribute to giusto pio’s genius
“KUM – intertwined paths with Franco Battiato” is a remarkable work that honors the art of Giusto Pio, a master of musical experimentation, and his profound artistic connection with Franco Battiato. This collection, created in collaboration with the Associazione Studio Giusto Pio, Artis Records / Cramps Music, and Miraloop, offers a unique insight into Pio’s sonic evolution, deeply tied to Battiato’s visionary perspective.
Four masterpieces, one musical journey
The double vinyl KUM features four significant works:
- Rappel (1978)
- Alla Corte di Nefertiti (1988)
- MeDea (1991)
- A.D.A.M. Ubi Es (1993)
Three of these works are previously unreleased, while “Alla Corte di Nefertiti,” conceived and named by Battiato, was published in the 1980s by his label, L’Ottava. This collection takes listeners on an emotional journey through experimentation and innovation, where musical fragments and “astral counterpoints” create a harmony that is truly one of a kind.
An enduring artistic bond
The collaboration between Giusto Pio and Franco Battiato has been described as an “artistic marriage with no chance of divorce.” Their relationship translated into a continuous exchange of ideas and visions, resulting in tracks that remain hypnotic and contemporary to this day.
An emblematic example is “Rappel,” created with Battiato’s innovative equipment, such as Revox tape recorders, and Pio’s violin improvisation during the Punto Rosso concert in Palermo in 1978. Months later, this improvisation became “Telegrafi,” included in Battiato’s album “Juke-Box.”
A multisensory experience
KUM is not just a musical piece but also a visual and narrative one. The vinyl’s cover is an abstract elaboration of Giusto Pio’s original drawings, representing symbolic shapes, colors, and figures. Inside the sleeve, detailed prints and descriptions of each work provide historical and artistic perspectives on Pio and Battiato’s creations.
A masterpiece to listen to and cherish
KUM is more than just a musical collection; it’s an invitation to explore Giusto Pio’s post-avant-garde vision and his connection with Franco Battiato. Each track is a piece of a mosaic that continues to amaze and inspire, even after nearly half a century.
