The national hydrogen strategy: a decisive step for Italy’s energy transition
The Ministry of Environment and Energy Security (MASE) unveiled the National Hydrogen Strategy today, marking a pivotal moment for Italy’s energy future. This strategy outlines a clear pathway for developing the hydrogen market, emphasizing sustainability and technological innovation.
Key objectives of the strategy: boosting demand and strengthening supply
The strategy sets out specific goals, including:
- Promoting hydrogen demand in industries and transport by engaging end users in ambitious, large-scale projects.
- Supporting hydrogen production through financial and regulatory incentives to lower operational costs and foster specialized expertise.
- Building essential infrastructure for hydrogen storage, transport, and distribution, ensuring a robust logistical network.
Hydrogen’s critical role in decarbonization and energy independence
The hydrogen sector is deemed essential for achieving decarbonization goals and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. According to H2IT president Alberto Dossi, hydrogen serves as a strategic energy vector, enabling sustainability and bolstering Italy’s global technological competitiveness.
Turning guidelines into concrete actions: challenges for the future
The strategy marks the starting line, not the finish line. Alberto Dossi emphasized the need for tangible steps:
“An operational plan is needed to translate guidelines into actions. Short-, medium-, and long-term tools are required to support businesses, incentivize demand, and provide certainty for the entire sector.”
Strong coordination between ministries and active industry involvement will be essential to realize this vision.
H2IT: a strategic network for hydrogen sector development in Italy
Founded in 2005, H2IT unites over 170 members, including large, medium, and small businesses, research centers, and universities. This network represents the entire hydrogen value chain, from production to end-use applications in key sectors such as mobility, industry, and energy production.
H2IT remains committed to driving infrastructure creation, supporting the growth of the hydrogen market, and ensuring Italy’s leadership on the global stage.
