According to legend, Barbara of Nicomedia was martyred by her father Dioscorus for her steadfast Christian beliefs. However, divine justice struck when her father was killed by a heavenly fire or lightning.
Following the invention of gunpowder, Saint Barbara’s image began appearing in ammunition depots, especially aboard warships, to safeguard against fires and explosions. Over time, she became the patroness not only of gunners and military engineers but also of firefighters and miners.

In 1951, Pope Pius XII officially declared Saint Barbara the patroness of the Italian Navy. The interfaith Christmas blessing in Pompei
On Thursday, December 5, the Pontifical Shrine of Our Lady of the Rosary in Pompei hosted a special ceremony for the Interfaith Christmas Blessing.
