The ICC’s charges
The International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, and the head of Hamas’ armed wing, Mohammed Deif. The charges include war crimes and crimes against humanity, such as using starvation as a weapon and targeting civilians.
ICC judges claim sufficient evidence points to Netanyahu and Gallant depriving Gaza’s civilians of essential resources. Deif, meanwhile, is accused of orchestrating violence against Israeli civilians.
Israel’s reaction
Netanyahu called the arrest warrant “absurd” and “antisemitic,” stating that Israel will continue its war objectives without intimidation. He asserted that “no external decision will prevent Israel from defending itself.”
The Israeli government criticized the ICC as a biased political entity, labeling the accusations as baseless.
The US and Italy’s perspective
The United States has categorically rejected the ICC’s decision, arguing it lacks jurisdiction. President Biden reaffirmed US support for Israel, condemning any equivalence between Israel’s actions and Hamas’.
Italy voiced criticism through Defense Minister Guido Crosetto, labeling the ruling as “wrong.” However, Italy emphasized its commitment to international law compliance if required.
Political implications
The ICC’s decision might have limited practical effects, as neither Israel nor the US are ICC members. Nevertheless, it sparked an intense international debate, with Hamas welcoming the ruling as a milestone toward justice.
