Inflation stable in September: prices frozen, shopping basket eases

Istat preliminary data confirm slower price growth and overall stability

Italian inflation remained stable in September 2025, unchanged from August at +1.6% year-on-year. According to Istat’s preliminary estimates, consumer prices decreased by -0.2% month-on-month, signaling that the disinflationary trend is continuing, though the economic environment remains fragile.

Core inflation steady

Core inflation – excluding energy and fresh food – held steady at +2.1%, indicating persistent but non-worsening price tensions. Inflation excluding only energy goods fell from +2.3% to +2.1%.

Shopping basket slows

A positive sign comes from the so-called “shopping basket”, which includes food and everyday items. In September, price growth slowed to +3.2%, offering some relief for households struggling with daily expenses.

Outlook to watch

September’s data confirm Italy’s alignment with the European trend: inflation is under control but still above the ECB’s 2% target. The coming months will be crucial to monitor energy prices, raw materials, and the impact of monetary policy.
