Two days of European celebrations for gender equality in the legal professions
An award to rewrite the history of female justice
525 years after her historic arbitration, Giustina Rocca, the first documented female lawyer in history, is being honored again in her hometown Trani with the second edition of the Giustina Rocca European Award. Held on May 23–24, 2025, the event gathers 30 top legal professionals from across Europe, celebrating law, culture, and the ongoing struggle for gender equality.
Giustina Rocca: the pioneer who spoke to the people
In 1500, when women were barred from professions, Giustina Rocca boldly issued an arbitration ruling in the vernacular—rather than Latin—to ensure it was understood by the attending public. She demanded to be paid on par with her male counterparts, boldly asserting her right to practice justice. In 2022, the European Court of Justice named its highest tower after her.
Two full days of culture, prizes, and dialogue
Organized by the Centro Studi Giustina Rocca, the award is supported by key institutions, including the European Parliament, the Puglia Region, the University of Bari, and the National Bar Council. This year’s theme: “The European dimension of women in legal professions.” The award ceremony takes place on Saturday, May 24, at the “Giovanni Bovio” Municipal Library in Trani.
Thirty finalists from across Europe deliver a shared message
From Brussels to Palermo, 30 female lawyers and jurists were selected by a high-level jury. Prizes include cash awards, practical legal tools like robe backpacks, AI-powered legal databases, and branded gifts. The first prize of €2,000 will be awarded by the City of Trani, with other prizes ranging from €1,500 to €1,000 and exclusive special recognitions.
Trani transforms to welcome the champions of justice
Beyond the awards, participants will enjoy a cultural walking tour through Trani’s iconic legal and historical sites, including its cathedral and courthouse, ending with a final toast. The award night features music, vintage Vespas, local delicacies, and networking in the picturesque via Mario Pagano.
A deeper dive: AI and women in legal professions
On May 23, the historical library of the Trani Bar Association hosts the panel “Artificial Intelligence and Gender Equality in Legal Professions.” The event, accredited with 3 legal credits, includes talks from judges, lawyers, and AI experts exploring the digital transformation of the legal world.
The real woman behind Shakespeare’s Porzia?
Giustina Rocca may have inspired Shakespeare’s “Portia” in The Merchant of Venice, but unlike the fictional heroine, she didn’t have to disguise herself as a man. Her legal voice was heard publicly and under her real name—a groundbreaking act in 16th-century Europe.
