A call for change: the reasons behind the strike
On Friday, November 29, workers, students, and retirees will march to demand wage and pension adjustments to match inflation. They also call for increased funding for healthcare, education, and transportation, as well as timely support for industries affected by the green transition.
The strike, organized by Cgil and Uil, will culminate in Naples, where a march will start at 9:30 a.m. from Piazza Mancini and end in Piazza Matteotti. There, Pierpaolo Bombardieri, Uil’s general secretary, will deliver a final speech.
The enduring value of street protests according to Biagio Ciccone
Biagio Ciccone, general secretary of Uil Pensionati Campania, emphasizes that strikes represent more than just economic demands. “In an era where a Facebook live stream can reach millions, street protests remain a crucial tool for collective mobilization,” Ciccone asserts.
He believes taking to the streets serves to:
- prove that intermediary bodies, like unions, are still active and necessary;
- highlight the complexity and diversity of Italian society;
- show that citizens are willing to stand up to defend fundamental rights.
A message for future generations
Ciccone also underscores the intergenerational significance of protests. “Demonstrations teach younger generations how to defend democracy, showing that without collective solidarity, individuals are powerless against major political and economic forces.”
He concludes by stating, “Protesting keeps the flame of freedom alive, a guiding light for building a better future.”
