Reporting as a means of protection
In Naples and its province, there are 35-40 reports per day of gender-based violence, with over 5,400 criminal proceedings handled annually. The increase in cases, particularly among young people, indicates both a worsening trend and a greater willingness to report incidents, thanks to the Red Code law. This regulation ensures the presence of qualified professionals in police stations to provide victims with support, encouraging them to break the silence.
The crucial role of media
According to Raffaello Falcone, Deputy Prosecutor of Naples and coordinator of the “Weak Social Groups” section, journalism plays a key role in the fight against gender-based violence. During the training course “Stop Gender-Based Violence. Train to Stop,” Falcone emphasized the importance of responsible storytellingto raise awareness and challenge cultural stereotypes that perpetuate violence.
Prevention and protective measures
Besides awareness campaigns, preventive protection measures such as the warning decree have shown promising results. This decree forces offenders to undergo a rehabilitation program, significantly reducing repeat offenses to below 10% according to data from the Naples Police Division.
The alarming trend among young people
The 2023 Report by the Central Criminal Police Directorate highlights a concerning trend: victims under 13 years old account for 10% of cases, while juvenile offenders aged 14-17 exceed 25%. Young people’s perception of violence remains distorted: an Istat study found that 16% of young people aged 18-29 believe it is acceptable for a man to monitor his partner’s phone, while 5% justify physical violence in cases of jealousy.
Changing mindsets to eliminate violence
For psychologist and criminologist Danila Pescina, the key to change lies in reshaping young people’s perceptions, promoting healthy, respectful relationships. The transmission of patriarchal cultural norms within families continues to hinder awareness of abusive behaviors and their impact.
The vital role of information
Ketty Vaccaro, head of the Welfare and Health Area at Censis, stressed the need for media to promote gender equality. Ottavio Lucarelli, President of the Order of Journalists of Campania, echoed this, highlighting how accurate and responsible reporting can raise awareness and drive societal change.
