Searches at the homes of Andrea Sempio and his friends reignite the mystery of Chiara Poggi’s murder
Spotlight back on the Chiara Poggi murder
Eighteen years after the murder of Chiara Poggi, committed on August 13, 2007, in Garlasco, the Pavia Public Prosecutor’s Office is reopening one of Italy’s most controversial cold cases. Early on the morning of May 14, Andrea Sempio, a childhood friend of the victim, became the focus of new searches by the Carabinieri. The searches took place at his home in Voghera and at his parents’ house in Garlasco. Officers reportedly seized mobile phones, computers, and digital storage devices.
Digital evidence and investigative developments
According to sources close to the investigation, the goal is to extract data that could clarify movements and communications around the time of the murder. Investigators from the Milan Investigative Unit, under the coordination of the Pavia Public Prosecutor, also raided the homes of two friends of Sempio, where further materials were taken.
New clue leads to Tromello: weapon in the canal?
In a surprising twist, authorities moved their search to Tromello, a small town near Garlasco in the Lomellina region. A witness reportedly claimed the murder weapon had been discarded in a nearby canal. As a result, divers and special units have been deployed to comb the area and retrieve any evidence.
Who is Andrea Sempio?
Andrea Sempio was previously considered in the investigation but was not charged when Alberto Stasi—Chiara Poggi’s then-boyfriend—was ultimately convicted. However, new forensic analysis and other emerging evidence may offer an alternative theory of the crime. The forensic focus on digital footprints could reshape the narrative investigators have pursued for over a decade.
The case that won’t stay closed
The Garlasco murder case has haunted public memory and judicial debate. The final conviction of Stasi seemed to have closed the matter—until now. With Sempio under fresh investigation and the search for the murder weapon revived, the Italian public once again turns its eyes to that quiet villa with the green shutters.
