A simple tape measure for a healthier heart

Can a measuring tape help prevent heart disease and metabolic disorders? According to the Italian Heart Foundation (FIPC), the answer is yes.

With the endorsement of the Italian Ministry of Health, FIPC has launched Italy’s first national campaign raising awareness about the link between waist circumference and cardiometabolic risk.

The campaign, supported by 18 leading scientific societies and patient associations, encourages Italians to measure their waist circumference, adopt healthier habits, and consult healthcare professionals to assess their risk.

“Reducing even a few centimeters from your waist is not about aesthetics—it’s about health.” – says Emanuela Folco, President of FIPC.

Obesity and overweight: silent threats to heart health

Obesity is a chronic disease and a major risk factor for cardiovascular and metabolic conditions. In Italy:

  • 41% of adults aged 18 to 69 have at least three risk factors, including hypertension, diabetes, and obesity.
  • Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death, accounting for 31% of fatalities.
  • Globally, obesity rates have more than doubled since 1990 among adults and quadrupled among adolescents.

How to measure your waist circumference in 4 easy steps

📏 Use a flexible measuring tape (available for download on the campaign’s website).
🧍‍♂️ Stand upright, removing tight clothing or belts.
⚖️ Wrap the tape around your waist, at navel level (between the last rib and the top of the hip bone).
✍️ Record your measurement and check your cardiometabolic risk level.

Fighting obesity with knowledge and teamwork

“Combating obesity means addressing one of the primary risk factors for chronic diseases,” stated Health Minister Orazio Schillaci, emphasizing that healthy eating and regular exercise are essential for preventing cardiovascular diseases.

The campaign is supported by Novo Nordisk, GVM Care & Research, Zentiva, and Daiichi Sankyo, along with scientific institutions and healthcare professionals, to promote evidence-based health information and debunk myths about obesity and metabolism.

📢 The campaign runs until World Heart Day in September 2025.
