On February 1st, the “Focus on colon cancer screening” congress will be held at the Federico II palace hotel in Enna. The event, chaired by Professor Marcello Maida, associate professor of gastroenterology at Enna’s ‘Kore’ University, will feature 37 specialists discussing the latest strategies for prevention and diagnosis of colorectal cancer (CRC).

A global health challenge

CRC is one of the most common cancers worldwide, being the third most prevalent in men, the second in women, and the fourth leading cause of cancer-related deaths. This underscores the critical need for effective prevention strategies to reduce incidence and improve patient outcomes.

According to the scientific coordinators, Marcello Maida and Roberto Vassallo, prevention is divided into two main areas:

  • Primary prevention, focusing on health education and risk factor elimination.
  • Secondary prevention, involving screening programs to enable early diagnosis and more effective curative treatments.

However, awareness among the general population and adherence to screening programs remain insufficient, limiting their effectiveness. Furthermore, the crucial role of colonoscopy in diagnosis and treatment is not universally accessible, creating disparities in care.

Innovation and future perspectives

The congress will explore advanced endoscopic resection techniques that offer less invasive therapeutic options compared to surgery. Another key topic will be the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in gastroenterology, from enhancing screening to training young specialists. Despite its potential, the use of AI is still limited due to insufficient regulation.

A day of discussion and education

The event, supported by prestigious organizations like the Italian Society of Gastroenterology (SIGE) and the Federation of Italian Digestive Disease Societies (FISMAD), will include four working sessions, discussions, and a round table. Key objectives include:

  • Improving clinical and care pathways.
  • Analyzing new diagnostic and therapeutic techniques.
  • Exploring the role of the microbiota in modulating therapies.

The course is open to 100 participants, including doctors, biologists, psychologists, and nurses, and offers 7 ECM credits.
