Musk and TikTok: No interest in acquisition

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has publicly stated that he has no interest in acquiring TikTok, shutting down rumors about a possible takeover of the popular social network. The billionaire made his position clear during the WELT Economic Summit on January 28, saying: “I have not made an offer for TikTok and have no plans for what I would do if I owned it.” His statement, published by The WELT Group, was reported by CNN, putting an end to speculation.

TikTok’s situation in the United States

The Chinese-owned platform ByteDance, with approximately 170 million U.S. users, has been at the center of political tensions in the United States over alleged national security concerns and data handling issues. According to a bill signed by former President Joe Biden, the app was supposed to find a non-Chinese buyer to avoid a ban imposed by the government. Initially set for January 20, the executive order was extended by 75 days, giving ByteDance more time to consider options. However, the company has clarified that it has no intention to sell, despite interest from several investors.

Who wants TikTok? The other contenders

Unlike Musk, other magnates have openly expressed their desire to acquire TikTok. Among them is MrBeast (Jimmy Donaldson), a famous YouTuber and influencer, who publicly announced his interest in buying the app in January. Kevin O’Leary, a well-known Shark Tank investor, and Frank McCourt, former owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers, have also shown interest in taking over the social platform.

Musk’s statements at the WELT Economic Summit

Elon Musk‘s remarks came in a setting where Chatham House Rules usually apply, allowing information to be shared without disclosing identities. However, his contribution was made public with his consent. During his speech, Musk emphasized: “I’m not eager to acquire TikTok. I haven’t made an offer, and I have no idea what I’d do if I owned it”, adding that he personally doesn’t use TikTok.

As speculation and new potential buyers emerge, the future of TikTok remains uncertain. What do you think? Should TikTok stay under Chinese ownership or move to American hands? Share your thoughts in the comments!
