A decisive blow against drug trafficking

In the provinces of Taranto, Bari, Brindisi, Lecce, Foggia, and Cosenza, Italian Carabinieri executed a major anti-drug operation. Acting on orders from the Lecce GIP and the District Anti-Mafia Directorate, authorities carried out 21 precautionary measures against individuals aged 20 to 60. They face charges of drug trafficking conspiracy, aggravated by the use of weapons and a hierarchical structure.

Two years of meticulous investigation

The investigation began in March 2021 after the seizure of one kilogram of heroin and €5,500 in cash. Over 30,000 communications were intercepted, and surveillance systems were installed on key city streets.

In August 2022, the seizure of 250 grams of cocaine launched a second phase of the investigation, confirming the group’s organized structure.

A sophisticated criminal network

Group members used dedicated phones and messaging apps to avoid detection. The drugs were sourced mainly from Bari and Brindisi, transported using convoys and guarded by lookouts at distribution points.

Authorities arrested 23 individuals in flagrante delicto and seized 4.3 kg of drugs, two firearms (one with a defaced serial number), and ammunition. Drug sales were estimated to generate around €500,000.

Criminal activities within prison walls

One notable case involved a detainee in Taranto prison requesting drugs for resale among other inmates, illustrating the network’s reach even under high surveillance.
