A significant anti-drug operation unfolded today between Latina and Rome, resulting in the arrest of 16 individuals. Directed by Rome’s Anti-Mafia District Directorate, the investigation involved various law enforcement units, including the Carabinieri, State Police, and Fondi Police Department, with support from specialized teams such as K9 units and Pratica di Mare’s Air Unit.

The arrested are accused of being part of a criminal association focused on drug trafficking, aggravated by the use of weapons, extortion, and violence.

Three interconnected investigations

The charges stem from three interconnected probes:

  • 2020 investigation: Initiated after a group member’s arrest and subsequent cooperation. Evidence was collected through Encrochat, a secure system decrypted with French assistance.
  • 2021 investigation: Sparked by a series of bomb attacks in Fondi.
  • 2024 investigation: Launched after a 2023 extortion case.

An organized drug trafficking network

Authorities uncovered a solid criminal structure with its operational base in Fondi, branching into Latina, Terracina, and Nettuno. The suspects held specific roles, from leaders to participants, ensuring a stable supply of drugs such as hashish, marijuana, and cocaine.

Operation outcomes

Key results include:

  • Three foiled attacks against rival dealers.
  • Seizure of weapons, explosives, and drugs in Fondi in 2021.
  • Multiple arrests in flagrante delicto during the investigation.

Presumption of innocence

The suspects remain under preliminary investigation and are presumed innocent until proven guilty, as stated in Article 27 of the Italian Constitution.
