Händel and Mozart: a meeting of two geniuses
Mozart’s adaptation, created in 1789, emerged from a commission by Vienna’s Baron van Swieten’s Concert Society. It aimed to adapt Händel’s Messiah to contemporary musical tastes. Despite the substantial re-orchestration, Mozart skillfully preserved the spiritual depth of the original, creating a profound dialogue between musical eras.
