Italian journalist Cecilia Sala, arrested on December 19 in Iran, is at the center of a concerted effort by the Italian government. Her detention in Evin prison in Tehran under harsh conditions has raised concerns both nationally and internationally.
On the afternoon of January 2, an emergency meeting was held at Palazzo Chigi, led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Attending were Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, Justice Minister Carlo Nordio, Undersecretary to the Presidency Alfredo Mantovano, and representatives from Intelligence. The summit emphasized the urgency of ensuring Sala’s immediate release and her treatment in conditions that respect human dignity.
From Evin prison, Cecilia Sala has communicated her dire situation to her family: she sleeps on the floor, lacks her glasses, and has been denied the package sent by her parents. In one of her calls, she pleaded, “Act quickly.”
Sala’s mother, Elisabetta Vernoni, met with Prime Minister Meloni, who reassured her of the government’s commitment. Following the meeting, Vernoni stated, “I have great trust in their work and feel reassured.”
The government also highlighted its compliance with Italian laws regarding the Iranian detained at Malpensa airport, reaffirming its intention to collaborate with Iranian authorities for a swift resolution.
Foreign Minister Tajani publicly expressed his hope that Sala’s release would be expedited, referencing the successful resolution of journalist Alessia Piperno’s case, who was freed after 45 days of detention.
This situation remains under close watch, with hopes that the Italian government’s determination will soon bring Cecilia back home.
