A devastating event shakes Calenzano
A tragic explosion rocked the Eni refinery in Calenzano, near Florence, resulting in two fatalities, eight injuries, and four missing persons. The incident occurred at the fuel depot and caused damage visible for kilometers, shattering windows in nearby industrial buildings. A towering column of smoke could be seen from surrounding towns.
According to initial reports, several fuel trucks were in the depot when the explosion occurred. Emergency services, including firefighters, medical personnel, and law enforcement, responded swiftly. The flames were brought under control, preventing further damage to nearby fuel storage areas.
Authorities address safety concerns
The Governor of Tuscany, Eugenio Giani, confirmed that the flames did not reach the main fuel tanks, averting an even greater catastrophe. However, the explosion caused regional train service interruptions between Florence and Prato, while the Calenzano exit on the A1 highway was closed.
The Regional Environmental Protection Agency is conducting tests to assess environmental risks. Additionally, the Civil Protection Department activated a crisis unit and issued the first real-world alert using the It-Alert system, demonstrating the importance of advanced emergency tools.
Investigations seek answers and accountability
The chief prosecutor of Prato, Giuseppe Tescaroli, inspected the site and announced the launch of a criminal investigation to establish responsibility. Attention is focused on the safety protocols in place at the time of the explosion and the depot’s operational management.
Giovanna Ferrara, president of Unimpresa, expressed her condolences to the victims’ families and emphasized the critical need for workplace safety, particularly in high-risk industries like energy. She called for investments in training, prevention, and innovative technologies to minimize risks and protect workers and surrounding communities.
