Inspection reveals illegal practices in bakery
During a joint inspection by the Marcianise Forest Police Unit and the territorial station in San Marcellino, a bakery was found using unsuitable wood as fuel for baking. During the operation, pieces of old wooden pallets were discovered inside the active ovens, being used as combustibles.
Dangerous waste found outside the bakery
In the bakery’s external yard, the authorities uncovered about 8 cubic meters of waste, including wooden pallets, pieces of polystyrene, and other debris. Some pallets had been cut into smaller pieces using an on-site bandsaw. Additionally, two rusty containers were found holding ashes from burned wood, mixed with oxidized nails and metal debris.
Why using unverified wood is hazardous
The use of pallet wood as fuel poses significant health risks, as such materials are often treated with chemicals or contain dangerous metals. Regulations require that wood used for baking must be virgin, traceable, and sourced from authorized suppliers to ensure food safety and environmental protection.
Bakery and materials seized by authorities
Following the discovery, the bakery and the waste materials were placed under judicial seizure. This measure aims to protect consumers and prevent non-compliant practices that jeopardize public health.
