A clandestine operation in Torre Annunziata
In Torre Annunziata, the NAS Carabinieri of Naples, supported by local police and ASL Napoli 2 Nord staff, shut down an illegal meat processing facility hidden within a private building. The plant lacked essential certifications, including the “EU Approval Stamp”, and operated under severely unhygienic conditions.
“O pere e o’ musso”: tradition under threat
Authorities revealed that the facility processed low-value bovine and swine parts, including offal and by-products, to prepare “O pere e o’ musso,” a staple of Neapolitan street food. The meat was handled with contaminated equipment and stored in unsanitary conditions surrounded by various waste materials.
The seizure: 3 tons of potentially dangerous meat
Officials seized 3 tons of meat lacking traceability documentation, effectively shutting down a business that posed a significant threat to public health. The entire operation, valued at €400,000, was immediately closed. Administrative fines exceeding €50,000 were issued.
A call for food safety
This operation highlights the importance of food safety and proper product traceability. Protecting citizens and preserving local traditions must align with compliance to hygienic regulations.
