The Guardia di Finanza of Gallipoli, under the coordination of the Provincial Command of Lecce, concluded a significant operation against the illegal trade of fireworks and counterfeit toys, resulting in two individuals being reported to the Prosecutor’s Office in Lecce.

Investigations uncovered a large warehouse in southern Salento, which served as a storage center for the retail distribution of counterfeit toys branded with names like Disney, Marvel, Pokémon, Nintendo, and other internationally registered trademarks. The 37,000 seized toys failed to meet Italian and European safety standards, posing a tangible risk to children’s safety.

During the operation, officers also found a massive quantity of fireworks, with over 370,000 items weighing a total of 1.4 tons, including around 250 kg of active gunpowder. The explosive materials were stored unlawfully in the warehouse basement, along with other highly flammable materials, creating a significant public safety hazard.

The two individuals have been reported for crimes related to the illegal possession and distribution of explosives, as well as for trademark counterfeiting. It is important to note that the investigation is still in its preliminary phase, and the suspects’ responsibility will only be confirmed by a final court ruling.

Fighting the spread of non-compliant products is crucial to ensure consumer safety and to foster a competitive, fair marketplace that benefits honest businesses.
